Oxytrol, also known as Oxybutynin, is prescribed for treating the symptoms of an overactive bladder (a sudden urge to urinate, urinary incontinence, and also frequent urination). The drug is usually prescribed only in adults.
It is also useful for children, above 6 years of age and who are suffering from the signs of detrusor muscle hyperactivity which is associated with neurological conditions, like spina bifida.
Medication must always be taken as advised by your medical practitioner/physician. If you are unsure, then please contact your physician for precise instructions. On the other hand, the medicine label usually contains dosage instructions which also may be followed.
Only when you are ready to apply the patch must you open the pouch. Once the pouch is open, make sure you remove the protective liner from the part of the patch exposed to the adhesive. Do not forget to apply this patch onto a clean, smooth and dry area of your skin on the abdomen, hips, and buttocks. You must press the patch firmly so as to ensure it stays on. Generally, one patch is applied which is replaced in every 3 to 4 days, making it twice in a week; or as advised by your medical practitioner. Follow the dosage schedule carefully and do not forget to change the patch on the very same 2 days of your week so as to help you remember. The new patch has to apply on a different area of the skin in order to prevent any skin irritation. You must not apply the patch on the same area within a period of 7 days. Try and apply it on an area of skin which is usually under clothing and is protected from sunlight. Avoid the application of the patch on your waistline as tight fitting clothes may rub it off, or on areas where sitting may loosen it. Avoid application of the patch on irritated and oily skin or even to areas where powder or lotion is applied. Any kind of contact with water while swimming, bathing, showering, or exercising will not alter the way this medicine works. Avoid rubbing the patch during any of these activities. If there is any kind of reaction on the area around the patch then try for a new site. But if the irritation continues or even becomes worse, seek the help of your doctor immediately. If the patch you have applied falls off, then make sure you reapply it or if possible apply a new patch and start wearing it until the next patch should be applied. On the time of applying a new path, remove and dispose of the old patch properly in the trash. You must not forget to fold the sticky sides of the patch together and then throw away where it cannot be accidentally swallowed by anyone else, even a child or a pet, not can it be worn.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Oxytrol performs a dual mechanism of action. The contraction of the soft muscle of the bladder is motivated by a release of acetylcholine by the nerves within the bladder and the addition of the acetylcholine to receptors on the exterior of the muscle cells. Oxybutynin which is delivered into the blood mainly suppresses the involuntary contractions of the bladders smooth muscle or spasms and also blocks the release of acetylcholine. This is known as an anticholinergic effect. Oxytrol also helps in a direct relaxation of the bladders in the outer layer of muscle or the detrusor muscle.
You must maintain a schedule for taking the medicine at the same time each day so that you do not miss out on any doses. But, in the advent of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember so that you can compensate for the loss of the dose.
But, then you may need to adjust your remaining doses accordingly. And if it is almost time for the next dose, then please skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.
Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.
Oxytrol must be stored at a cool and dark place that prevents it from direct exposure to sunlight. It should also be protected from kids and pets. You can store it at room temperature preferably between 15 to 30 degrees C.
