Cytoxan is an anti cancer medication that is prescribed in the treatment of cancers like lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemia, mycosis fungoides, neuroblastoma, ovarian cancer, eye cancer, and breast cancer. It may be used alone or in combination with other cancer medication.
It may also be prescribed for the treatment of kidney problems (nephrotic syndrome) in children .
Your doctor may also prescribe Cytoxan for other conditions if found appropriate.
How to use Cytoxan
The ideal way to use Cytoxan is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.
Cytoxan may be taken with or without a meal to avoid stomach problems.
Cytoxan should be taken with a full glass of water.
Preferably, Cytoxan should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.
You must not stop taking Cytoxan without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Cytoxan is an antineoplastic drug that prevents cancerous cells from replicating and spreading in the body.
It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Cytoxan to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.
On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.
Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.
Since Cytoxan is a sexual enhancement drug, it is taken only when required. So a missed dose is highly unlikely.
Store Cytoxan between 68 to 77 degrees F (20and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.
Avoid storing Cytoxan in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Cytoxan if you have conditions like, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.
Do not use Cytoxan if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), you are in the first 3 months of pregnancy or you are breast-feeding; you are taking tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-blocking medicines (e.g,. etanercept).
Cytoxan is known to weaken the immune system and also reduce the blood clotting ability of the body. One must avoid contact with people who have infections like cold, fever, flu etc.
It may also cause permanent infertility and also enhances your risk of getting a second cancer sometimes even years after stopping treatment once.
You must use a birth control method while using Cytoxan. Please consult your doctor before receiving vaccinations.
If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Cytoxan as Cytoxan may harm your fetus.
If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Cytoxan is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.
You must inform your doctor or your dentist about Cytoxan before you undergo treatment or any emergency surgery. If possible, inform at least 10 days in advance.
You may be required to undergo certain lab tests including complete blood cell counts, platelet counts, and urine tests while taking Cytoxan. These tests are prescribed to monitor the progress as well as the severity of side effects. Please do not miss any lab appointments.
Please maintain caution while using Cytoxan in elderly patients as they may be more prone to its side effects.
